Getting back to basics

Happy New Year! We are less than a week into the new year and the excitement of new things to come in still on our minds. Why do we always get excited over the new year? Short answer, we get to start again. The old is gone, the new has come! The new year is a great time to start healthy habits, begin new traditions and get back to the basics of who you are.

What does that mean?

Let go of all-consuming habits. For example, this may be hard to believe but your phone does not have to be an appendage. If possible leave it in a room and when it rings, answer it. Or make a rule for yourself that you cannot check social media until after 5 pm. The first three weeks of this year I am making an effort to fast all social media, sweets and severely limiting all other screen time. I don’t realize how much I pick up my phone to check Instagram until I’m not on it. I keep getting surprised by how much time I use up…scrolling. Obviously, I’m still updating my blog, but I don’t have to go on Facebook to do that.

What else can you do?

Take care of yourself I’m all for self-care, I’ve written a post about it. If you are like me, you may not have a ton of time in your day to really rest. But you can do a few things that will only fill you up.

  • Read the Bible, You Version Bible App has hundreds of translations in many languages and a plethora of devotionals and bible plans. Don’t have time to sit and read? Most of them have an audio function. I promise this is a better way to start your day than looking at your friends rant their business on Facebook.
  • Get up a little earlier, listen/read your bible and slowly take in your morning. When you are rushing to get started it sets you up to be stressed.
  • Check yourself, have you been rude to your family or co-workers? Are you short-tempered with people? Point at yourself and ask why, and be ok with the answer. Pray about it, talk to God. He will give you the right answers.

Dream again  I’m serious. Dream, what are some things you would want to do if you had no limits? I’m not just talking about Instagram worthy vacations and jealousy-inducing photos of food. What are things you want to do with your life? Is it finally starting a blog? Is it having children? Becoming a stay at home mom? Is it working with a nonprofit organization in your town, is it going into a new occupation? Dream. Write it down, start thinking of ways to can begin to see those dreams coming to fruition.

Start moving Do something small for yourself and start moving, it could just be walking around your block one a day, doing 10 push-ups daily, or maybe you are someone who happily goes on 5-mile runs (not me), move! In the wise words of Elle Woods in ‘Legally Blonde’ “Exercise gives you endorphins, and endorphins make you happy, and happy people just don’t shoot their husbands”

Husband or not, getting fresh air is never a bad thing.

Write it out Having a short to do list is something I’m learning to do, and it really does help. I would avoid writing them because if I didn’t get what I had done on my list, I would feel guilty. I would just try to remember things in my head and likely forget things anyway. So instead of just making things harder for myself, I start to write down things I want/need to get done that day. If you don’t get it done, just do it the next day. Feeling guilty will not make whatever that task was complete, but just put undue stress on yourself.  Still, want to get yourself a physical organizer for this year? Check out Amazon.

So that’s it. I pray you can begin this new year simply, only taking in what’s important and leaving behind what can weigh you down.
